Dr. Mrs. Kusum Tamhane — Medical career and Sanjeevani Hospital

Decades in medicine — serving families through the most important moments of their lives.

01 · A LIFE OF SERVICE

A foundation built on healing.

Dr. Mrs. Kusum Tamhane dedicated decades of her life to medicine as an Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Infertility Specialist.

Her journey was not simply about a profession. It was about serving people, standing beside families through difficult moments, and helping bring new life into the world.

Through determination, discipline and years of relentless work, she went on to establish Sanjeevani Hospital — turning a vision of compassionate healthcare into a reality for countless families.

Dr. Kusum Tamhane — The turning point and new realisation

A question that changed everything — from the clinic to the soil.

02 · THE TURNING POINT

When healing went beyond the hospital.

After years in medicine, another question began to emerge — can we truly protect health if we ignore the environment and what we eat?

For Dr. Kusum, healing could not end at the hospital doors. Her attention gradually moved toward food, soil, nature and the conditions in which our food is grown.

This became the beginning of a completely different chapter.

“Can we truly protect health if we ignore the environment and what we eat?”

The barren hill — where Amrut Sanjeevani began

The beginning — a barren hill and an unwavering decision to transform it.

03 · THE LEAP

Where others saw barren land, she saw possibility.

Dr. Kusum made an unconventional decision and purchased a barren, deserted hill. It was dry, undeveloped and far from the green farm visitors see today.

She moved onto the land, built a humble jhopdi, and began with what she had — determination, patience and a few saplings.

Day after day, she planted. Season after season, she nurtured. Slowly, the land began to change.

Season by season — the barren hill slowly transformed into a living forest.

04 · THE TRANSFORMATION

One tree. One season. One step at a time.

The transformation did not happen overnight. There were difficult conditions, years of hard work and countless challenges.

But every sapling became another step forward. The woman who had spent years caring for patients was now caring for the land itself.

Slowly, the barren landscape became a living green ecosystem — and the work did not go unnoticed.

Vanshree Puraskar

Dr. Kusum's extraordinary contribution to afforestation and environmental restoration was recognised with the Vanshree Puraskar, presented by then Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan — an acknowledgement of what patient dedication to the land can achieve.

05 · THE NEW PURPOSE

From healing people to growing health.

The transformation of the land led to a deeper realisation — good health begins long before we enter a hospital. It begins with the soil. It begins with what we grow.

Dr. Kusum turned her attention towards natural, chemical-free farming, following principles of Subhash Palekar Krushi (SPNF) and focusing on purity, sustainability and zero-adulteration food.

The once-barren land had become something much more meaningful — a place where nature and health could grow together.

Amrut Sanjeevani

From a barren hill to a living green sanctuary.

Years of patience transformed that once-barren landscape into the green Amrut Sanjeevani we see today.

And the journey did not stop at growing food. The vision evolved into Amrut Sanjeevani — bringing naturally grown and carefully prepared food closer to people's homes.

From medicine to a hospital.
From a barren hill to a thriving farm.
From caring for people to caring for the soil that feeds them.

This is not just the story of a farm. It is a lifelong commitment to healing.
